The field workers were discriminated upon with the deplorable conditions we lived in. The discrimination I experienced in Waco, Texas, a hardcore white southern Baptist city with segregated schools, and racial discrimination. In Lubbock, Texas, where Mexicans were not allowed or wanted in the Waco schools, were teachers who allowed white students to make fun of and bully Mexicans because of the color of their skin, culture and language. The city of Waco and its white neighborhoods discriminated against Mexicans and African Americans on jobs- minorities were fired to give whites the jobs, while minorities had to work in the cotton fields and do minimal jobs to survive. This story is also about my experience in the Marine Corps, combat in Vietnam, and how I, with the strength of Jesus and God, lived through combat and concentrated in getting an education to better myself for a good future and to set an example to all Mexicans. My family saw that a Mexican can have a life that turned against him can come out of the dark side into a brighter future through education.
