It is very important on my first consultation with a patient that they develop a basic understanding of their aortic problem and what risk factors they have they predisposed them to their condition. I carefully review their individual risks that I have determined through their history and physical examination. Unfortunately, some patients don’t have any of the defined risk factors, which means that their is a lot more about aortic aneurysms and dissections that we need to understand.Once I have gone over the patient’s risk factors, I then discuss with them the anatomy of their aorta and how that pertains to their specific problem. Finally, I discuss treatment options. It is my hope that this brief report can be used by anyone with aortic disease or a family history of aortic disease to learn more about their problem and assist with making an informed decision about their treatments.Find out what risk factors contribute to developing aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections, and discover which factors you can control and which are predetermined by your genes.
